Battery storage vs. diesel generator
The storage system transfers in milliseconds, works silently with PV and earns money in normal operation — the generator supplies power for as long as there is fuel. The combination is often the strongest solution.
What this is about
Both technologies keep loads running during a grid outage — but in fundamentally different ways. The storage system is an energy system with a backup function; the generator is a pure emergency machine.
Battery storage
A storage system with an STS takes over defined loads in under 20 ms — controls and IT ride through with minimal interruption, something no starting generator can do. It runs silently, without emissions and with little maintenance, recharges from PV during grid operation, and earns its keep daily through self-consumption and peak shaving. Its limit is capacity: the bridging time is finite and must match the backup concept.
Diesel generator
A generator delivers power for as long as fuel is available — unbeatable for outages lasting days or weeks. In exchange it needs 10-60 seconds to start, regular test runs, fuel logistics and maintenance, and in normal operation it just sits there. In island mode it must handle the inrush currents of large loads on its own.
Comparison criteria
| Criterion | Battery storage | Diesel generator |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer time | under 20 ms (with STS) | 10-60 s |
| Supply duration | limited by capacity | unlimited (with fuel) |
| Value in normal operation | self-consumption, peak shaving | none |
| Emissions / noise | none | exhaust, noise, permits |
| Maintenance | low | test runs, fuel care |
The Speichercampus verdict
Storage is strong at fast transfer, PV, short to medium outages and load peaks. Generators are strong for very long outages. The combination is often right — storage bridges instantly, the generator covers long outages, and the PotisCabinet D9 coordinates exactly such systems.
