Storage Elf L1 — SAV's compact C&I storage series

The Storage Elf L1 is an all-in-one storage cabinet for small and medium-sized commercial and industrial applications. Battery, inverter, EMS, transfer switching and fire protection sit in a single enclosure; it connects three-phase on the AC side, optionally with a PV array connected directly on the DC side.

The series comes in four configurations. They differ solely in the number of battery packs — everything else is the same.

Each battery pack contributes 16 kWh of capacity and 8 kW of power. The ratio of energy to power is therefore constant across the series: every variant can absorb or release its capacity in roughly two hours.

What all four variants share

Cabinet and footprint do not change: 1,150 × 2,000 × 1,050 mm, so roughly 1.2 m² of floor space. Foundation, grid connection and the built-in inverter with its 100 kW maximum AC power are identical too. Building larger later therefore wastes none of the preparatory work — only the weight goes up.

Also shared: LFP cells, intelligent air cooling, IP55 protection with corrosion class C3/C5, smoke and heat detectors with aerosol suppression, an operating range of −30 to 50 °C, and Modbus RTU/TCP over RS-485 or Ethernet. The manufacturer states a cycle efficiency of up to 90 %.

Which variant fits?

Capacity alone does not answer that. What decides is the job the storage system is meant to do:

• PV self-consumption — capacity is what counts. It should match the PV array’s daily surplus, not its rated output.
• Peak shaving — power is what counts. The decisive figures are how many kilowatts the peak is to be cut by and how long it lasts. Both are in the grid operator’s load profile.
• Backup power — both count, plus the protection and transfer equipment.

Where several jobs coincide, they do not simply add up. A backup reserve is not available for peak shaving; PV surplus and load peaks rarely occur at the same time. So before quoting we establish which operating mode takes precedence and what that means for sizing.

Configuration options

Two functions depend on configuration:

The PV input accepts up to 70 kW of DC-coupled PV through one MPPT tracker (438–900 V, with derating below that). This can save a separate PV inverter. The manufacturer’s datasheet lists the input as an option.

The grid/island transfer is specified by the manufacturer with a transfer time of at most 20 ms. That too is listed as an option in the datasheet, while the manufacturer’s website describes it as a standard function. We clarify the scope of delivery before quoting.

Either way, backup power remains a planning task rather than a product feature. Grid disconnection, protection equipment, load allocation, inrush currents and bridging time are assessed for each site.

The Speichercampus assessment

The L1 series closes a gap: it sits below the cabinet class around 215 kWh but well above what residential and small-scale systems deliver. For businesses with a PV array in the mid two-digit kWp range and a clearly defined storage purpose, this is often the economically appropriate size.

It argues against the series if sustained high loads or very high cycle counts are expected — then a comparison with liquid-cooled systems is worthwhile. And if the storage system is meant to grow substantially, it is worth checking whether several units in parallel or a larger class from the outset is the better route.
